Last time someone was right(!) behind me, I had to slow down to reduce the risk for them. I am not even kidding and obviously know how that person must have been raging. The same way you need to stop kids from harming themselves I felt for that driver, regardless of how shitty both think it is.

You can be going the same speed as the person in front of you and faster then the people in the right lane passing everyone, and still have people tailgate you in the left lane.

People over take me on the right all the time because I wait for a gap big enough to merge back into the right lane safely and impatient pricks put the petal to the metal and squeeze through a gap barely wide enough for their vehicle, making it so I can’t even merge to the right lane until they pass, whereas if they waited literally 3 seconds they would have been fine instead of risking multiple people’s lives doing a dangerous maneuver.

People tailgate for any number of reasons on a road with any number of vehicles or lanes. I don’t know where and how you are driving that you expect that to never happen as per your example. The driver could simply be much faster to begin with, so by the time I have nearly completed taking over, he is already behind me and simply has to break.
