And there you can see the reality of US policy. Biden can speak all the nice words about human dignity, the value of freedom, and the right of self determination, but they are all hollow sentiments. Your moral worth has nothing to do with what is in your heart. The only thing that matters is your behavior. Likewise, the only thing that states should be judged on is their behavior. As a US citizen, it is heartbreaking to again witness the depravity of my own nation. It’s made doubly difficult when we have to endure the endless parade of false moralizing from this administration, and the one before that, and the one before that, on and on and on.
The irony is that the situation is pretty much the opposite of this – the US vetoed a symbolic, non-binding resolution for essentially messaging reasons (it didn’t explicitly acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defence), but when it comes to concrete action it’s providing millions in humanitarian relief, and Biden is pressuring Netanyahu privately and publicly to pull back from a full invasion and allow a relief corridor.
If it’s symbolic, what harm would it have done to vote yes?
I obviously don’t know, but I can imagine one possible reason is that it’s to try to win favor with Israel.
Israel has a right wing government and those types tend not to like to be told what to do. So if you tell them to do something, they will be less likely to do it.
But if you privately convince them to do it, then they can pretend like they’re the good guys and they came up with the idea.
Ah yes. Surely the secret plan will work this time.
Biden is pressuring Netanyahu privately and publicly to pull back from a full invasion and allow a relief corridor.
Biden has been pretty clear on his administration’s stance on this war, and it’s not “let’s not murder innocent Palestinians”. Biden has been telling Netenyahu to chill out (from a full invasion to bombing the shit out of Palestinians), but didn’t actually do anything. The US is still sending billions of dollars to Israel.
‘Israel has the right to defend itself’ has become the new 14 words, hasn’t it?
Precisely. Being an ultra-nationalist ethno-supremacist is totally cool though as long as you’re Israeli. Don’t you know they “earned” the right to be racist xenophobic psycopaths.
Anybody who says otherwise is a antisemitic dog whistler who loves murdering babies and should be shunned from society…
Lol Biden only cares that Netanyahu doesn’t go full genocide otherwise his own position will look bad which is already supporting Israel.
It only took the USA a day after Hamas’s attack to send munitions with no issue, Biden knows exactly where he stands.
Furthermore, none of that aid is currently reaching Palestine anyway. Last I checked he was only able to convince Israel for 20 trucks of aid, no fuel, and one time entry from Egypt.
At best he probably got him to delay or reduce some of the planned ground attack so that it won’t be a complete immediate massacre, and more like a month long killing spree.
States don’t have morals, they have interests. The US has an interest in justifying the 20 year imperialist war they waged.
Actions speak louder than words in a nutshell…
Well said.
The Good Guys™ doing as expected, nothing to see here.
Ah, yes, this is the part where I get to feel embarrassed about my nationality because our politics sometimes completely lack any nuance whatsoever and it’s fucking stupid :(
Don’t feel embarrassed. Nations are social constructs and just lines on a map.
Its not just embarrassment we should feel. Arbitrary constructs are still capable of creating massive unneccessary human tragedy, repeatedly.
Even nihilism teachs that no structures are permanent, not that none are important or have impact for a time
You could say that about a lot of things, but that doesnt make them any less real.
It makes them, not real. We allow nations. We could easily create a world without nations and borders. Dare to dream.
Sure! Its just a point about semantics. Apples and planes and tables and chairs are all constructs, but theyre also very real. Just like nations, borders and ideas.
Material versus immaterial. A chair 🪑 is a material object. It’s physical. Nations and borders are ideas that have no physical material. If I walk to the border if my “nation” there is no material dashed line representing the border. There’s a river. Intro to philosophy should be taught in schools.
This isnt a discussion about the materiality of things. Its about whether or not theyre real.
If you can’t understand me, we can’t communicate.

Why should there be a pause? To let Hamas gather even more hostages from the people of Gaza? Seems like a terrible idea.

Good comment, except I took it personally because I have a colonoscopy this week. Thanks for reminding me. /s

The UN is not useless. The whole point is to facilitate conversation between governments. They were never intended to have authoritative power.
