To be fair, is the Chat GPT native app really an amazing representation of a native Android or iOS app? It’s a chat bot that works almost identically to the website.

What a ridiculous headline. What about all the other apps they “avoided” naming as their app of the year?

Unique utility and learning apps built from the ground up vs an api frontend. The choice is pretty obvious.

All trials might have been unique a decade ago, but it’s basically just yelp for trails and there are several apps that do the same thing but better. The only major changes all trails has made in the years I’ve been using it is locking more and more features behind a subscription fee. I guess that’s “unique”. Certainly more innovative that a pocket conversational AI that I can have an realtime voice conversation with, or send pictures to to ask about real world things I’m seeing, or generating a unique image based on whatever thought pops into my imagination that I can share with others nearly instantly. Nothing interesting about that. The decade old app that collates user submitted trails and their reviews and charges 40 dollars a year to use any of its tracking features is the real game changer.

Tbf AllTrails saw a niche and jumped on it. It’s the first smartphone app that I’ve seen getting meat-space word-of-mouth advertising in years. Like before a few months ago I couldn’t remember the last time someone was like “hey you should check out this app” but it’s happened to me a couple of times now while chatting with relative strangers.

That’s how I learned about Alltrails. Haven’t done much hiking yet so I haven’t subscribed, but I have it on my phone.

Isn’t he ChatGPT app merely a front end to an off-site service? Why the fuck would it deserve an award itself? The service, sure; but the app?!

I believe this game of the year appropriately summarizes gaming in Apple’s ecosystem:

Why be disingenuous, the Mac game of the year was Lies of P, and the iPhone game of the year was Honkai Starrail. Apple has so much shit to criticize that you don’t have to make things up to make them look bad.

Also I will not hear any Hello Kitty slander.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Surprisingly, however, Apple this year bucked the trend of highlighting apps that were new to the store or that had taken advantage of a recently released technology in an innovative way.

That’s particularly odd given that ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer application in history earlier this year when it reached 100 million users shortly after its launch.

“It’s inspiring to see the ways developers continue to build incredible apps and games that are redefining the world around us,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a statement about the 2023 winners.

“This year’s winners represent the limitless potential of developers to bring their visions to life, creating apps and games with remarkable ingenuity, exceptional quality, and purpose-driven missions,” he added.

The company also rounded up other apps it wanted to highlight by giving them individual accolades, including the Best App for Fun Bumble for Friends: Meet IRL, Best for Personal Growth Voidpet Garden: Mental Health, Best Everyday Essential Artifact: Feed Your Curiosity, Best Hidden Gem Aware: Mindfulness & Wellbeing, Best with AI Character AI: AI-Powered Chat, Best for Families Paw Patrol Academy, Best App for Good AWorld in support of ActNow, Best for Watches WhatsApp Messenger, Best for Tablets Concepts: Sketch, Note, Draw, Best for Chromebooks FlipaClip: Create 2D Animation, Best for Google TV Max: Stream HBO, TV, & Movies, Best for Cars Amazon Prime Video

It also rounded up Honorable Mentions for those that didn’t win their app category, including Reelsy Reel Maker Video Editor,  Imprint: Learn Visually (which won overall but was an Honorable Mention in Personal Growth), ReciMe: Easy & Tasty Recipes, Stippl: Explore, Plan & Share, ChatGPT (which won User’s Choice but was an Honorable Mention in Best with AI), LEGO DUPLO DISNEY, AllTrails: Hike, Bike & Run (also Apple’s iPhone app of the year), Audible: Audio Entertainment, Canva: Design, Photo & Video, Everand: Ebooks and audiobooks, Evernote – Note Organizer, Wideo, Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Disney+, Tubi: Movies & Live TV, Beach Buggy Racing, and Spotify (which won Best multi-device app but was an honorable mention for Best for Cars.)
