After weeks of testing, Direct File, an electronic system for filing returns directly to the IRS is now available for taxpayers from 12 selected states.

      Hopefully never, because they don’t know if you qualify for credits like home energy efficiency improvements. But a W-2 and the various 1099s make it pretty easy to fill out a 1040. Personally I just use FreeTaxUSA so I just retype the numbers and hit submit.
