This is the premiere of the fifth and final season of ā€œStar Trek Discoveryā€, the first iteration of Trekā€™s modern era. I think it is important in this moment to acknowledge that, regardless of individual opinions of quality the series ā€“ personally I am a fan, but this is not about my personal perspective ā€“ without DIS we would not have the abundance of new Trek available to us.

With that acknowledgement aside, on with the very serious business.

ā€¢ This episode is the first mention of the titular Red Directive. Starfleet has a number of directives most recognizable of which is the Prime Directive, introduced in ā€œReturn of the Archonsā€, which codifies interactions with non Federation cultures, and their principles of non-interference. There is also:

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Temporal Prime Directive forbidding interference with historical events, first mentioned in ā€œFutureā€™s End, Part IIā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Omega Directive, dictating the necessity of destroying any and all omega particles that might be encountered during the course of Starfleet activities, introduced in ā€œThe Omega Directiveā€

ā€¢ This episode was written by DIS co-showrunner, Michelle Paradise, and directed by executive producer, Olatunde Osunsanmi.

ā€¢ The episode opens with Captain Burnham [Sonequa Martin-Green] on the exterior of a ship at warp. Weā€™ve previously seen characters outside ships traveling faster than light in ā€œDivergenceā€ and ā€œMindwalkā€.

ā€¢ The crew of the USS Discovery A attends a Millennium Celebration commemorating 1,000 years of the Federation. The Federation was founded in 2161, as per ā€œThese Are the Voyagesā€¦ā€ and this episode takes place, presumably, in 2191. The cadet serving the signature cocktail, Tonic 2161, does comment ā€Give or take a few decades,ā€ when Tilly [Mary Wiseman] explains to Adira [Blu del Barrio] the context for the drink.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Tonic 2161 is blue with stars floating in it to match the emblem of the Federation emblem.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Ross claims the stars taste like jumja sticks, a Bajoran treat first seen in ā€œA Man Aloneā€. Bajor has, to the best of our knowledge, not been inducted into the Federation at any point.

ā€¢ Stamets [Anthony Rapp] is upset because Starfleet is ā€œshuttering the spore drive program.ā€ In season four, the programā€™s lead scientist used a stolen prototype to attempt to reach Species 10-C and kill them with an illegal weapon.

ā€¢ A prototype pathway drive was mentioned as having been installed aboard the USS Voyager J in ā€œKobayashi Maruā€.

ā€¢ President Tā€™Rina mentions the Tholian Republic and Breen Imperium as polities outside the current Federation, and seems to imply theyā€™re antagonistic if not hostile to the Federation. The Tholian Assembly was introduced in the TOS episode ā€œThe Tholian Webā€, and the Breen Confederacy was mentioned in ā€œStrange Bedfellowsā€.

ā€¢ The 800 year old Romulan science vessel is an update of the Romulan ship seen in ā€œThe Next Phaseā€.

ā€¢ When Lā€™ak removes his helmet, there is a brief moment where his face appears to be non opaque, not entirely dissimilar from how Changelings are see through in the natural state, or Mellanoid slime worms, such as Murf.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Lā€™ak is played by Elias Toufexis, who previously had a role DIS season oneā€™s ā€œContext is for Kingsā€ as one of the other prisoners aboard the transport shuttle rescued by Discovery along with Burnham. He never asked for this.

ā€¢ Antares is a well loved name for Starfleet vessels:

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Antares, NCC-501 - ā€œCharlie Xā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ USS Antares - A ship both Captain Pike and Number One served aboard, according to ā€œBrotherā€ and ā€œMemento Moriā€ respectively

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ USS Antares, NCC-9844, Miranda-class - ā€œFavor the Boldā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A Kelvin Universe USS Antares - 2009ā€™s ā€œStar Trekā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ In addition there are also three different Antares-class ships: one used by the Corvallens in ā€œFace of the Enemyā€; a carrier used by both Cardassians and Bajorans, introduced in ā€œEnsign Roā€; a civilian freighter like Kasidy Yatesā€™ SS Xhosa first seen in ā€œFamily Businessā€.

ā€¢ There are new aspects integrated into the title sequence. For the purposes of this comparison Iā€™ll be mentioning changes from specifically the season four sequence. Such as:

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A rotating planet with two moons has replaced the visualization of Zoraā€™s program

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The captainā€™s chair appears earlier in the sequence

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A 3d representation of a symbol from a Romulan journal is shown

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Infinity Room key appears, replacing an exploded planet, and Discovery approaching the DMA

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Bookā€™s unnamed ship is replaced with Moll and Lā€™akā€™s

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A number of rotating structures are now at the very end where there used to be a long range view of the DMA

ā€¢ Burnham, Owosekun, and Rhys find the mummified corpse of a Romulan wearing a TNG era uniform.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ We will learn that this Romulan was Doctor Vellek, a scientist present for the events of the TNG episode, ā€œThe Chaseā€.

ā€¢ Burnham is able to grasp her phaser pistol, and stretch it out into a type-3 configuration. Itā€™s unclear what advantage the transformation has. Other than Boimlerā€™s assertion that, ā€Uh, they take two hands,ā€ from ā€œWhere Pleasant Fountains Lieā€.

ā€¢ Moll [Eve Harlow] and Lā€™ak have a Romulan puzzle box, a tan zhekran, when Burnham confronts them. This puzzle box is larger than the one Narek had in ā€œThe Impossible Boxā€, and has more sides.

ā€¢ When we see the Antares, it has the saucer of a Friendship-class starship, and the nacelles of Merian-class, both first seen in ā€œPeople of Earthā€.

ā€¢ ā€I would rather not die out here, Iā€™ve got a saxophone lesson to get to.ā€ Harry Kim took up playing the sax in ā€œAshes to Ashesā€.

ā€¢ Captain Rayner [Callum Keith Rennie] is a Kellerun, which have only previously been seen in the DS9 episode, ā€œArmageddon Gameā€. I mention this only because Rayner lacks the somewhat distinctive topknot that all the men of his species styled their hair in in that episode.

ā€¢ Book [David Ajala] has been helping refugees displaced by the DMA rebuild, as per the community service he was sentenced to in ā€œComing Homeā€.

ā€¢ ā€Itā€™s like what it means to be a crew. I canā€™t crash all these kids on to an ice moon in order to teach them that.ā€ Tilly is referring to the events of ā€œAll Is Possibleā€

ā€¢ Fred is a synth with skin, eyes, and hair presumably inspired by Data. Or Lore? Or B4.

ā€¢ Among the gear Moll and Lā€™ak attempt to sell to Fred are:

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Isolinear co-processors

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ PADDs

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Tricorders

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Self-sealing stembolts

ā€¢ Fred claims to have not encountered a tan zhekran for 622.7 years, which would indicate heā€™s been functional since at least the mid 26th century.

ā€¢ The script in the journal contained in the puzzle box is different from the Romulan language seen in TNG and other Star Trek shows and movies of that era; it was introduced into canon in ā€œAbsolute Candorā€ but was created in 1993 by linguist Trent Peherson who is credited in this episode as a language consultant.

ā€¢ Fred has a number of weapons on display in his place of business, including:

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A Klingon kurā€™leth as seen in ā€œDisengageā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A dā€™k tahg,

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A Klingon batā€™leth of the type introduced in ā€œThe Vulcan Helloā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A TNG era Romulan disruptor pistol

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A ā€œFirst Contactā€ type-3 phaser rifle

ā€¢ Book and Burnham are able to rent some sand bikes. The bikes have shields capable of protecting the rider from ship based weaponry, which probably has to reduce the deposit, right?

ā€¢ Stamets determines that Fredā€™s serial number begins with AS as an homage to Altan Soong, and claims that Fred was based on Altan Soongā€™s designs, not Noonien Soong, despite the resemblance to Data.

ā€¢ In Kovichā€™s quarters, he brings explains the basic plot of ā€˜The Chaseā€™, and brings up stills from that episode featuring the Romulans, Captain Picard, and the Progenitor.

    Iā€™ve missed these.

which would indicate heā€™s been functional since at least the mid 26th century.

    But is Fred fully functional?

This is the second Star Trek season premiere that features the destruction of a Soong-type android, after Picard S1E1 ā€œRememberanceā€ introduced and murdered Dahj.

Iā€™m not sure Soong-type android applies to Fred, and Iā€™m certain it doesnā€™t fit Dahj.

Unfortunately itā€™s not clear just how indistinguishable from life Fred was. We know Dahj and the other Coppelius synths passed for human. Even Picard, though there was clearly some differences. With Fred, though, Culber pulled up the graphic of his internal works, and it didnā€™t look like heā€™s a meat robot. However, if he was closer to Data and Lore, I donā€™t think getting shot in the chest would have been enough to kill him. Dataā€™s detached head was stuck in a mine on Earth for about 450 years and worked just fine after being reattached to his body, but I get the distinct impression that Fred wouldnā€™t take decapitation so well.

I am loving this seasons so far, does anyone know if I watch the TNG episode that this season connects too if it will spoil anything for later seasons of TNG? I am still in like season 4 or 5 as I am going through TNG, VOY and DS9 all at the same time.
