Pretty much this. From the late 80’s more and more smoking bans were put into place. Public buildings, any private business, public transport, etc.

For those in the US, Tire Rack can shave down a new tire to a specific depth for you. You just need to measure the other tire(s) to give them a measurement.

Maybe the appeal is the “cool factor”. Here’s 2 examples I could think of. At work, you want to stand out from the “water bottle” people. At parties/bars maybe you don’t want to drink alcohol, but still want something in your hand while you’re mingling.
