  • I have to enter data into payroll for when a teacher covers a class for an absent teacher. Usually, there are 5 teachers who I pay for one hour each. Each teacher has an ID number.

To pay one teacher I have to enter their ID number. Select their job code from a drop down list, tell the database I am adding to it by choosing or entering A in a box. Then I have to pull the date from a drop down list. Then I enter the digit 1 (to pay 1 hour). Then I enter the ID number of the absent teacher. Then I enter the sub request number created by the absent teacher. Then I click “change.”

I have to do this for all 5 teachers that covered the class. One-at-an-effing-time.

If I had a “dev” handy, I would say, let me enter the ID, date, and job number for the absent teacher. Let me list the 5 substituting teacher id numbers, and the 1 hour should be the default.

Of course there will never be a ‘dev’ around because my county purchased the payroll software and no one who is anywhere near using it gets to make the purchasing decisions.

  • After setting up my family for life, I’d use the rest to start a micro-lending company for small businesses to get started or expand. I’d open them next to dollar stores and hire lots of bilingual people. We’d have free business plan advice, too. For fun I’d buy houses in lousy neighborhoods, fix them up and fit them out with solar and geothermal systems, then offer to trade the house with a neighbor and repeat the process. This would cost money but a billion can go a long way one house at a time and see step one.

  • Knot tying is a handy skill and easy to acquire. All you need is a short length of rope and watch a few videos. There may be thousands of knots you can learn, but most people should take the trouble to learn a few tried and true knots. Maybe you want to move a mattress on the roof of your car. Maybe you want to tie a pen to a clipboard. Maybe you want to tie back the legs when roasting a turkey. Maybe you need an impromptu collar & leash for a stray dog. Maybe you have to move a huge bundle of brush you’ve cut. Maybe you want to tie neat looking stopper knots on your hoodie’s drawstring. Knowing how to tie a few different knots will give you options when you’re trying to get stuff done.

  • It doesn’t have to be impeccable. It doesn’t need corporations to buy ads. It just has to keep getting better and not die. Look at Linux. It never did overtake MacOS & Windows on desktops. But it keeps getting better and it didn’t die and it took over server rooms. Look at Mastodon. It’s nowhere near as popular as Twitter and maybe never will be, but it’s 5 years old and is steadily growing. I like hanging out there. Oak trees start as acorns.

  • BEWARE of your MOVER! I don’t know how to beat this, but some moving companies play fast and loose with timing, especially if you don’t have enough stuff to fill the truck and the mover decides to combine trips. GET YOUR LOAD AND UNLOAD DATE IN WRITING and with no exceptions. Also, and it sucks to say this, but don’t trust reviews because some movers PAY people to take down negative reviews. I’m screaming because my daughter and her husband were royally f’d over by a mover when going from Morgantown to Philadelphia.
