Honestly, it sounds like she’s overdoing it on the production quality of her videos if it’s costing her $3500 per 20 minute video. It’s just YouTube.

She also says her best video got like 350,000 views, I’ve seen crappy reaction videos that get more than that. And Google takes 2/3 of the ad revenue for everything she makes.

I have no idea about production cost, but 3500€ sounds like a lot. Still, the days of “broadcast yourself” are clearly over (just look at the production value of philosophy tube, not to mention MrBeast). Unfortunately, cooking videos are notoriously demanding videos, at least when it comes to lighting and camera, etc. It’s really easy to make food look gross on camera.

Here’s an interesting video on cooking on youtube

From my TV exp. any “show and tell” videos are surprisingly hard, but food is a nightmare. Still it sounds like some really high costs.

i think philosphy tube is broadcasting herself though, she’s an actress and likes to put on a show, of course she’s started to put on more of a show once she’s gotten comfy in her skin & has a budget to do it

she’s having fun whilst making educational videos, it’s a win/win

it is a shame that everyone feels a pressure to perform to such high standard. if “yourself” isn’t selling well enough you’re either dropping out of youtube or ending up changing yourself into someone you’re not

The “broadcast yourself” bit was meant more like “just turn on your webcam and start filming stuff”.

speaking as an artist - we like to fuck around with the mediums we have, see how much we can express ourselves through it. but yeah not everyone wants to do that, and by now it’s a requirement to be “unique” and “the best” which is whack

Typical foodie blog with having to read about her life story before getting to the actual recipe!

$3500 per episode sounds like she was going a bit overboard & could easily refactor her costs without sacrificing quality

Jeez, I still remember when the production cost of videos was “I bought this camcorder a while back, so I guess, I might as well use it”.

very cool, thanks for posting. what’s laid bare here is the scam where if you keep at it, you’ll eventually get there - look at the joe rogans and the linusestechtipses, they kept at it and look at them now! the burried lede being that it’s virtually impossible to penetrate that level and at the same time being under google’s thumb, microdosing your cut and evermore shrinking the crumbs that get to you.

the issue with overpaying for production someone raised is valid, but even with reducing it to like a 10th of what she’s paying, it’s still nowhere close to “making it” in terms of sole income of a single woman with kids and whatnot. be that as it may, the script folder and the food beautifier and the scalper for this and that have to go, like yesterday, and them kids are now promoted to iphone recorders co-directors of photography immediately.
