Article by the Verge: It reports on technical difficulties encountered by movie theatre chain Alamo Drafthouse which prevented them from showing digital projections, due to software problems with Sony projectors.
I still can’t believe Sony is still in business. Who’s dumb enough to keep buying stuff from a company that booby-trapped their own CDs?
If you read the article, they are no longer in the business of selling theatre projection equipment.
This was probably an expired certificate. Alamo Drafthouse, like many movie theatres, probably cuts costs by not having a projectionist and lets the projectors essentially run on auto pilot, and then faced the consequences when no one noticed that their certificates had expired.
Sorry to be unclear, I meant in general - so because they booby trapped their CDs, nobody should buy their anything, not just CDs and projectors.
Isnt Sony still the golden standard for tvs?
Not so much with OLED being a thing. They do make OLED TVs now, but they’re just buying LG panels, so it comes down to is their image processing worth twice as much for the same screen.
Their industrial design is still top-tier throughout their portfolio though.
Yeah it’s crazy to think that a company like Sony makes more than just music.
Also interesting that Sony makes more money selling insurance and banking in Japan than they do with their music globally.
They’re pushing the boundaries on where to put malware!
Sorry but the booby-trapped their CDs? Could you explain further? I was not able to find out what you meant with a quick google search.
Back in the mid 00’s their CDs had a rootkit on them that installed software to interfere with CD Copying apparently also some of them phoned home with your listening habits. Stuff was hard if not impossible to remove, used system resources, crashed computers and was a security hole, just plain shity
IIRC, it became widely known that Sony was doing this after malware exploiting it became widespread enough to be noticed.
Thx a lot!
Holy shit thats dystopian shit.

They are talking about the Sony BMG rootkit.
Those fat BETAMAX royalty checks?
Why would I care about anything CD related…
Because it’s the result of their disrespect for you, the customer.
I’ve never heard of this issue though and their headphones and TVs and PS5 have made my life so fun lol
CONSUME
At some point you just have to enjoy the world you live in… You should try it!
I enjoy typing “COMSUME” at consumers.
Lol fair cheers
You yell that at literally every person you meet, because that basically includes every single person? You yell it in the mirror?
Lol. Imagine buying a mirror.
Here you go, for what it’s worth I’ve had tons of fun with competing products since then.
Wow that is quite egregious… Thanks for enlightening me. I think the solution to this sort of thing is regulations and that’s why I volunteer every election.
We don’t need anything they sell; boycotting them for 20 years has cost me neither money nor time. Direct action > voting.
I would argue that campaigning for local/state/federal is much more impactful than direct action against a company. I doorknocked more than anyone in my state Senate district and my state senator won in a red area, allowing Minnesota to have a 1-vote majority in the Senate. Now Minnesota has done more than any blue state across the board in two years than others have done in decades.
How are you estimating impact? In case you’re one of today’s “lucky” 10,000
