Defence chiefs under fire from childrenâs rights group after warning of âarmed attackâ from Russia spreads on TiKTok
Swedenâs answer to Childline was inundated with calls from Gen Z after senior defence officials gave a speech urging their countrymen to prepare for war.
Bris, a childrenâs rights organisation, provides support and advice to young people with mental health issues or facing teenage pregnancy.
But it reported a rise in calls after videos of senior defence figures warning of war circulated on TikTok.
Carl-Oskar Bohlin, the civil defence minister, told the Folk och Försvars conference on Saturday that âthere could be war in Swedenâ.
âFor a nation for whom peace has been a pleasant companion for almost 210 years, the idea that it is an immovable constant is conveniently close at hand,â he said.
âBut taking comfort in this conclusion has become more dangerous than it has been for a very long time.â
He added: âAre you a private individual? Have you considered whether you have time to join a voluntary defence organisation? If not: get moving.â
Sweden is set to join Nato as soon as July, ending more than two centuries of neutrality and ushering in a shift in the national psyche towards greater militarisation.
Its government has pledged to meet Natoâs 2 per cent of GDP defence spending target by the end of this year, double what it was in 2020.
âThey should have given advice for kidsâ Maja Dahl, a spokesman for Bris, said Mr Bohlin should have considered how his âwell preparedâ remarks would be interpreted by young people.
âThey should have provided information meant for kids when they come out with this kind of information for grown-ups,â she told the BBC.
Swedenâs defence minister and most senior generals, however, doubled down on Mr Bohlinâs remarks and endorsed them, telling Swedes that the country had no choice but to prepare themselves for war.
Pal Jonson, the defence minister, told the conference on Sunday that âan armed attack against Sweden cannot be ruled outâ.
âWar can also come to us,â he said. âThese serious times require clarity of vision, capacity to act and persistence â clarity of vision to understand that Russiaâs goal remains the eradication of a free Ukraine and creation of a Europe in which âmight is rightâ with buffer states and spheres of interest.â
âLook at the news from Ukraineâ Gen Micael Byden, the commander-in-chief, warned citizens live on broadcaster SVT that âyou have to prepare yourself mentallyâ.
He said: âLook at the news from Ukraine and ask yourself the simple questions: If this happens here, am I prepared? What should I do?
âThe more people who have thought, considered and prepared, the stronger our society will be.â
They been fear mongering this for years now in Sweden. We have been on the highest possible security alert for nearly 2 years. Bags are banned from public events. Paranoia seems to be taking over the people in charge of keeping us safe and I have never felt safer. One terrorist attack in 2017 and Putin sending men into the endless meat grinder in Ukraine and the whole thing falls apart.
âThey should have provided information meant for kids when they come out with this kind of information for grown-ups,â she told the BBC.
When⊠a defense official is discussing matters of national security⊠they need to talk to children too?
Children watch the news ass well I suppose. No need for alarmism maybe
Will someone think of the children!!! Jeez!!!
The official himself not, no. But in a lot of countries they would either have a government Office or the public broadcaster release a communication phrased for children in order to properly make them understand what the warning means

Terrible news to hear. Iâm also chuckling a little bit that itâs call bris when that word has a very different meaning in Jewish traditions.
So children between the ages 11 and 27 called the childrenâs hotline. OkâŠ
If Russia is now threatening 210 years of peace, then maybe itâs time to acknowledge that United Nations sanctions arenât enough. Maybe NATO should kick Russiaâs ass.
