Watchmen is kinda like the Mona Lisa. Is it the most incredible painting ever by today’s standards? Not at all, but during its time, it was incredible, influencing artists for centuries to come.
Watchmen elevated comic books from telling stories about boy scout aliens from Krypton to graphic novels about deeper, darker, bigger issues.
If you’re looking to get into graphic novels with a more literary bent, you’ll want to explore the indie scene, I think. I would recommend trying Maus or Persepolis to see if they are more what you’re looking for.
They’re probably not indie but some of my favorites have been saga and fables. I keep meaning to read maus and persepoilis as I know that they’re personal stories based on real events and I’m a sucker for those.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll give those a go for sure!
