  • Dredd is fucking fantastic, and I’m a big fan. It didn’t perform well at the box office, which is a huge shame as the sequel would have introduced Judge Death. The trailer was only released a few weeks before the film, and I don’t think most people were aware of it.

Actually, the first footage that appeared online was a VFX breakdown, but it was removed from YouTube after a couple of days.

The problem came down to money. There’s a video from the producer which explains that all the investors made a loss, so no one is interested in financing a sequel.

Also, I’ve seen some people claim this film is a rip-off of The Raid which isn’t true as I believe both were in production at the same time.

  • Could have been done just with a well directed animatronic coupled with some basic CGI to enrich some textures and details.

That’s exactly what they did. A full head animatronic of Ian Holm’s likeness was built.

People who claimed to have been at a preview screening say the effect was fully practical, but that it was also a little distracting because it looked like a “muppet” (Their words, not mine.)

So in the intervening time between previews and release, they have used AI and CGI to apparently make the eyes and lip sync movement smoother for a better effect.

I agree it looks jarring in the film and I would personally like to see the raw practical shots to see how it looked beforehand.

Romulus would be better without the callbacks to the first two films. One character in particular I wish was someone else entirely. Also, I didn’t like the ending as it tied into Prometheus/Covenant, my least favourite of the Alien franchise.

I feel Alien has gone the way of Star Wars which keeps linking to the Skywalker’s. Let Alien break free of the Ripley verse (She’s even in Romulus as a well hidden Easter Egg!) and do something different. The comics have had excellent stories over the years, adapt one of those.

One of my favourites is Aliens: Labyrinth which is about a crazy scientist on a deep space station who has successfully got the alien species under control. His backstory is quite something and you know it will go wrong in the end.
