Neat! Thanks for sharing!
I’m reading this again and had another thought. On an average Debian server reboot-required is really only ever triggered by kernel upgrades and those happen more often than you want but also not very often. They are also usually worth installing for either security or performance improvements.
It’s usually ok to just set a convenient time for unattended-upgrades
to run, let it watch for reboot-required
and then reboot automatically. If your services can’t handle starting at boot or turning off gracefully then you will have other problems anyway.
On the other hand, if even a few minutes of downtime every couple of months at a scheduled time is too much, just disable AUTO-REBOOT in the config file and do it by hand whenever it works for you. It’s all good. Do what works best for you, that’s the best part of Linux.
needs-restart
is another great package that will check if package updates should restart any services to take effect and restart them if so. Goes nicely with unattended-upgrades
There’s a package that handles most people’s needs called unattended-upgrades
. Has some options and some logic to do things like this. Check it out and let me know if you have any questions. Been using it on hundreds of servers for 5+ years.
I’ve been a big fan of Manjaro for exactly that reason. Something breaks occasionally and gives my skills a run for their money but a lot of the difficulty of running a rolling release gets nullified by the testing Manjaro does for you. It’s a great compromise, you get almost bleeding edge for much less work than an arch installation can take.
I love me some Debian for their stability and security, I run Debian or Debian based servers mostly. But I wanted something closer to the bleeding edge for my desktop so I could make use of newer features, run newer packages etc…
Also drive Manjaro and I tell people I use Arch, there are dozens of us
Haven’t enjoyed the Hularama episodes much until this one. Felt like they managed to land closer to home this time. Maybe we’ll get some episodes we’ll be proud to call Futurama 🤞.
This is just beautiful, thank you for sharing!
Same, I stream using the airplay protocol from my Lyrion Music Server and haven’t had to touch their app since they arrived. If they fuck with that though so help me god I will write the nastiest things about them on the internets.
I think it is measured and professionals who work in areas where this was relevant probably track this number among many others. I think the real question you are asking is why it is always framed as a % of GDP in public discussion and news reporting. Some people here point out how % of GDP can be more useful for comparing across countries with vastly different sized economies but I think we all know the real answer has more to do with how people perceive the value differently by using the larger number. Framing government debt as a % of GDP serves the zeitgeist, whatever that is.
I don’t get this sentiment, not a m$ fan but the surface hardware always made sense to me. Full laptop specs in a tablet style shape with a unique and useful aspect ratio. Sure they gimped the processor but it’s still 4 times as much CPU as an ipad. It’s a shame that android or IOS seem to be the only truly usable tablet operating systems these days.
As a side note I’m pretty shocked still at how poorly windows 11 performs on my SP7. It’s weirdly bad considering it’s their own damn hardware. There have been improvements since these things ran Windows 8 but touch still feels like a gimmick rather than a first class experience.
I installed some arch variant with a custom kernel that included the drivers on my SP3 a few years ago. Performed great, stable. Battery was meh, lost maybe 30% capacity which was pretty par for the course but maybe could have improved with more tuning. Tried using it primarily as a tablet and that sucked. Ran scripts to do things like help with palm rejection but it was just a poor tablet experience overall. Not that Windows provides a significantly better one. But certainly more usable.
It’s been 5 years though so maybe everything is better 🤞 . Please tell me if it is, I am thinking about flashing that same SP3 back to linux to be a dashboard somewhere.
I understand this reference and I approve o7
There’s absolutely a place for generated music. I have no doubt I’ll be bobbing my head to some ai beats before long. I think I was just bemoaning the changing of the things. Effort in the cause of good and beauty should always be rewarded.
Not a generic AI hater, just kinda pointing out how this is some generic soulless music. Posts like this used to mean someone spent hours and hours writing the song, recording it or producing it etc… Now it’s a subscription and a prompt. Just not the same, even if I hadn’t liked the song I would have respected the work but now, I dunno.
Anyway. I gotta give props here for the visuals though, someone clearly put time in there and I appreciated it.
i also use arch btw this some ai shit isn’t it
Yeah that looks like a no for me holmes. The ai features don’t tickle my pickle and while it’s still probably the best camera out there I crave that battery life more. MKBHD already dropped his initial reviews as well for what that’s worth.
Got my new phone budget two weeks ago and I’ve been waiting to see if the new pixel was worth it or if I should just buy a oneplus 12. The camera on the oneplus’s are never as good but all the other pixel features seem so meh usually. Especially that battery life, why can’t they just stick a bigger battery in these things.
I will happily take this opportunity to complain
/startrant that the abandonment of couch co-op is the worst thing to ever happen to gaming. There are some great couch co-op games out there, BUT NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. Seriously, the number of goddamn games that expect you to HAVE TWO COMPUTER AND TWO SCREENS SO YOU CAN PLAY CO-OP WITH SOMEONE ELSE IS TOO DAMN HIGH. /endrant
I highly recommend Broforce, any of the Larian studio games (Divinity Original Sin, Baldur’s Gate 3 etc…), Battleblock Theater, Castle Crashers, Cuphead, For The King, Hypercharge Unboxed, It Takes Two, Portal 2, Overcooked, SpiritFarer, Stardew Valley, Untitled Goose Game, Wobbly Life. Wish there were more.
It is the damndest shame that the Halo Master Chief Collection doesn’t have local co-op, still upsets me to this day.
