I believe classic refers to the FOSS version before the fork, while “Nexuiz” refers to the commercial version.
Since 2008. Here’s some footage of the early version. In 2015 I rewrote the game in my SDL2/OpenGL based engine and redid all the content, then more or less “finished” the game in 2020-2021. I’m working on a fairly big patch right now though. Maybe in a few weeks it’ll be released.

Super Tux Kart, The Dark Mod, and X-Moto are great. I created the original Skate Park Mod and a few of the early “interesting replays” like Slinky Mod, German Ham, and the first “cheating” replay.
No problems with Apex or Dead by Daylight on Arch here.
