There’s a difference between defending oneself and engaging in collective punishment and genocide. I am Jewish and the descendent of holocaust survivors. Not in my name.

Fines clearly don’t work. We need criminal penalties.
Yep - I identify as male, but I put he/they in my email signature because I a) want to signal active support for the trans community and b) don’t really think about my own gender much and kind of like de-gendering my language wherever possible.
When asked how many customers would be affected, the company said that while precise numbers are not yet available, up to four customers may be impacted. “I would like offer our sincere apologies to Aunt Sue, Uncle Frank, Mike, and Jodi.”

This reads like a train wreck start to finish.
The number of PSAs about not getting mowed down during Halloween was absurd. ‘Wear reflective vests’, ‘only cross the street in groups’ - and not a single ‘hey, it’s Halloween and there’s going to be excited kids everywhere - please avoid driving and if you have to, be super extra careful’.
My partner’s idea, which I thought was brilliant, was that the speed limit on all residential streets should be dropped to 20km/h for the day.
I’m reading The Last Emperox by John Scalzi. The series has some interesting concepts but while I really enjoyed Scalzi’s sense of humour in the Old Man’s War series, it doesn’t land quite as consistently for me here. Regardless, it’s definitely a fun read.
I agree - and for better or worse, lemmy.ml is likely to be many users first experience with lemmy. As a new user myself, I subbed to a bunch of communities on lemmy.ml because it’s what I interpreted as being the ‘core’ of lemmy. Ambiguous rules - especially ones resulting in bans for discussing articles from high quality news sources - is problematic and likely to turn some people off. This is particularly an issue when lemmy is building towards critical mass.
One of the principal complaints about reddit is power tripping mods - and it’s distressing to see that seemingly built into the DNA of lemmy.
The flip side of course is that this has sort of opened my eyes to the power of lemmy and the fediverse.
I wanted kids when I was younger, but wasn’t ready to give up my freedom. Once I was ready for kids the world (and the future in particular) looks so bleak that it doesn’t seem fair to the theoretical kiddo to say ‘hey, here’s a dumpster fire - good luck’. Instead I babysit for my friends and family, spoil the kids around me, and sleep in on the weekend. I also have more time for activism and trying to ensure a brighter future for kiddos.
No regrets.
